Chapter 9 - Matthew's Final RecordingThe photograph of Margaret Cole was fake.

Marcus discovered it within twenty minutes by tracing the image to a photograph taken during a medical emergency five years earlier. Someone had altered the background and added the note.
But the threat had achieved its purpose.
Daniel was furious, and Natalie insisted that the original clinic needed to be located before anyone else could interfere with the investigation.
By noon, we had a security convoy heading toward New Mexico.
Claire refused to stay behind.
Neither did I.
Ethan and Ava remained at the estate under the supervision of a trusted child-care specialist and two guards. Before we left, Ethan made me promise that I would call every two hours.
“Even if nothing happens,” he said.
“Even if nothing happens.”
He hugged me so tightly that I struggled to breathe.
Then he whispered, “Mom, if she really is my birth mother, does that mean you'll stop being my mom?”
I held him at arm's length.
“Nothing in this world can make me stop being your mother.”
He studied my face.
“Even if I have a different last name?”
“Even then.”
“Even if I'm rich?”
I laughed despite myself.
“Especially if you're rich. You'll need someone to remind you to clean your room.”
He smiled.
It was the first time I had seen him look like an ordinary eight-year-old since the highway.
I kissed his forehead and left before I could change my mind.
The clinic stood on a quiet street outside a small New Mexico town. Its sign had faded, and weeds grew through cracks in the parking lot.
A woman named Dr. Helen Morris met us inside.
She was in her seventies and looked exhausted.
“Margaret left an hour ago,” she said. “She knew someone was looking for her.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Where did she go?”
“I don't know. She asked me to give you something if you came.”
Helen handed him a sealed envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Daniel as a baby.
His birth mother was holding him, smiling down at him with an expression so tender that I felt a pang of grief.
On the back, she had written:
You were never unwanted. I left because I wanted you to live.
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like the little boy in the faded family portrait.
Then he opened his eyes and placed the photograph carefully inside his jacket.
“What happened the night my father took me?” he asked.
Helen took a long breath.
“Margaret worked for a medical charity funded by the Hayes family. She discovered that some of the charity's money was being diverted into private accounts. When she tried to report it, she was threatened.”
“By Eleanor?”
“By a lawyer named Victor Shaw. Eleanor came later.”
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Why did my father adopt me?”
“Because your mother believed the people threatening her would target you if they knew who your father was. Robert Hayes agreed to take you into his household and give you a new identity.”
“Did my biological father know about me?”
Helen looked away.
“I don't know.”
She opened a drawer and withdrew a small recording device.
“Margaret left this here several years ago. She said the recording should only be played if Daniel Hayes came looking for her.”
Daniel pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a man's voice spoke.
Robert Hayes.
Margaret, if you are hearing this, I have failed to keep my promise. Eleanor and Victor have found the accounts. They know about Claire, and they know about the children.
A pause.
I have arranged for Matthew Mitchell to protect them. He will not know every detail, because the fewer people who understand the arrangement, the safer they will be.
Another pause.
There is one thing you must remember. Daniel is not the enemy. He is the last person in this family who still has the freedom to choose what kind of man he wants to become.
The recording ended.
Daniel stood motionless.
I watched him struggle to absorb the message.
His father had known the truth.
He had known that the company was being used to conceal fraud.
He had known that Claire's children were in danger.
And he had known that Daniel would eventually have to choose between the empire he inherited and the people the empire had harmed.
Helen handed him another envelope.
“There's more.”
Inside was a photocopy of a police report concerning Matthew's crash.
A handwritten note appeared beside the original conclusion.
BRAKE FAILURE CONFIRMED. POSSIBLE SABOTAGE. CASE TRANSFERRED ON ORDERS FROM VICTOR SHAW.
Daniel read it twice.
“He buried the investigation.”
Helen nodded.
“Matthew discovered that the financial records had been altered. He sent copies to Robert Hayes and to Margaret. After Robert died, Matthew tried to contact Claire. That's when the threats began.”
“Who killed him?” I asked.
Helen looked directly at me.
“I can't prove it. But Matthew called Margaret the night before his death. He told her that someone inside the company had offered to exchange the children for the original evidence.”
My stomach clenched.
“Exchange them?”
“He believed Eleanor intended to use the children to force Daniel to sign away his voting rights.”
Daniel's expression turned cold.
“She wanted my signature because she couldn't obtain the heirs' approval.”
“Yes.”
Helen handed us a final piece of paper.
It contained a bank transfer authorization dated the day Matthew died.
The recipient was a private security company.
The sender was a subsidiary controlled by Victor Shaw.
Daniel called Marcus immediately.
“Freeze every company account connected to Victor. Notify the authorities. Preserve the original documents.”
He listened, then lowered his phone.
Marcus had found something at the estate.
A hidden room had been discovered behind the old executive study. It contained an obsolete computer, several sealed boxes, and a second recording device.
One box had been labeled with Matthew's name.
We returned to Arizona before sunset.
The hidden room was smaller than I expected. It smelled of dust and old paper. The walls were lined with shelves filled with files, each marked with a date.
At the center sat a computer that had not been powered on for years.
Marcus had already made a forensic copy of its hard drive.
He opened a video file.
Matthew appeared on the screen.
He looked tired, unshaven, and frightened.
But he was alive.
“Sarah,” he said.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“Matthew.”
His eyes on the screen seemed to look directly at me.
“If you're watching this, it means I wasn't able to come home.”
I covered my mouth.
He continued.
“I need you to know that I never wanted to leave you with this burden. I thought I could solve the problem before anyone realized what the children meant to the Hayes family.”
His voice cracked.
“I was wrong.”
He explained that Eleanor and Victor had created fraudulent transactions through the company. Robert Hayes had discovered the scheme, but his death prevented the evidence from reaching the board.
Matthew had copied the original records and hidden them in several places.
One copy was stored in the brass key.
Another was inside the archive.
The final copy was hidden in a location Matthew called the Last Promise.
Then he leaned closer to the camera.
“If Eleanor finds the children, she will use their identities to claim the trust. If Victor finds the evidence, he will destroy it. And if Daniel tries to protect the company without understanding his own family history, he will lose everything.”
He paused.
“Sarah, I need you to make one decision for me. Don't let the children's inheritance become another prison.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Let them choose who they want to be.”
The recording ended.
I couldn't move.
For eleven months, I had imagined Matthew's final moments as a terrible accident on a lonely road.
Now I knew he had spent his last hours trying to save us.
Daniel stood beside me.
“I'm going to make sure they answer for this.”
I wiped my face.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Sarah—”
“I want justice. But I don't want you destroying yourself trying to avenge my husband.”
Daniel was silent.
I took his hand.
“You said the company wasn't worth more than the family. Now you have to prove it.”
He squeezed my fingers.
“I will.”
Before we could leave the room, Marcus called from the doorway.
“Mr. Hayes, we've recovered the final file.”
Daniel turned.
“What file?”
Marcus held up a document.
The header read:
LAST PROMISE PROTOCOL: FINAL BENEFICIARY TRANSFER.
Beneath it was a list of names.
Robert Hayes.
Claire Hayes.
Daniel Hayes.
Matthew Mitchell.
Sarah Mitchell.
And the final two entries:
Ethan Mitchell.
Ava Mitchell.
At the bottom was a handwritten instruction.
THE FINAL WITNESS MUST BE PRESENT WHEN THE TRUST IS DISSOLVED.
Beside it was a name.
Margaret Cole.
And a location.
May you like
A private residence in Paradise Valley.
Eleanor's home.
