Chapter 14 - Hammer walked into the courthouse alone. No gun.

No phone.

No lawyer.

Only the red heart hidden inside his palm.

The building was empty.

Every light was on.

The courtroom doors stood open.

Inside, Judge Vale sat behind the bench.

Daniel Voss stood beside him.

Hammer stared.

“I thought you were dead.”

Daniel smiled.

“You people have been killing me for years.”

Hammer stepped inside.

“Where is Clara?”

Vale pointed toward the witness stand.

She sat there.

Alive.

Bruised.

Blood on one side of her face.

Hammer wanted to run to her.

Vale raised a hand.

“Don't.”

Hammer stopped.

“You wanted me.”

“Yes.”

“Take me.”

“That was always the plan.”

Hammer looked around.

“Why?”

Vale stood.

“Because you're the last person who remembers the original operation.”

Hammer frowned.

“I remember.”

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

Vale smiled.

“You remember the wrong part.”

Hammer's expression changed.

“What?”

Vale walked closer.

“The scars weren't from the warehouse.”

Hammer touched his face.

“No.”

“You were injured somewhere else.”

Hammer's memory shifted again.

A hospital.

A machine.

Daniel standing beside him.

A doctor.

Clara screaming.

Hammer being strapped down.

Vale's voice:

“Erase the memory.”

Hammer stumbled.

Mara's voice had warned him.

His memories had been manipulated too.

Vale continued.

“You were our first successful subject.”

Hammer stared.

“Subject?”

“Identity conditioning.”

Hammer's stomach turned.

“You erased my memories.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were going to expose us.”

Hammer looked at Clara.

“You knew?”

Clara nodded.

“I tried to stop them.”

Vale smiled.

“Then she failed.”

Hammer looked at his scars.

“You gave me those.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make you believe the warehouse fire was real.”

Hammer suddenly understood.

The entire event had been constructed.

The dead witnesses.

The fake records.

The prison sentence.

The fabricated story.

All of it.

He had spent nine years chasing a lie.

Vale leaned closer.

“And you were useful.”

Hammer whispered:

“How?”

“We made you the monster.”

Hammer looked toward the courtroom.

The same courtroom.

The same jury.

The same prosecution.

The same judge.

Everything was staged.

The trial wasn't about determining whether Hammer kidnapped Ellie.

The trial was about destroying him publicly before he remembered the truth.

Ellie had interrupted the script.

The red heart had marked the scar.

Because she knew the scar was a trigger.

A memory key.

Hammer smiled.

“You made one mistake.”

Vale frowned.

“What?”

“You taught my daughter to remember.”

Clara smiled.

Vale's expression changed.

Hammer pulled the red heart from his palm.

The device blinked.

The courtroom screens switched on.

Mara appeared on every screen.

The Red Archive was broadcasting live.

Millions of people were watching.

Every document.

Every name.

Every video.

Every crime.

The entire operation was exposed.

Vale turned pale.

“Stop it.”

Hammer laughed.

“You built the courtroom.”

He looked around.

“And forgot the audience.”

The doors burst open.

Federal agents entered.

Reporters flooded behind them.

Cameras turned toward Vale.

Daniel tried to run.

Mara stepped in front of him.

“My father.”

Daniel stared.

“You.”

Mara held up the ledger.

“You signed my birth certificate.”

Daniel froze.

“I gave you everything.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You gave me a fake life.”

Federal agents arrested him.

Vale stood motionless.

Hammer walked toward Clara.

They faced each other.

Nine years of pain.

Nine years of lies.

Nine years of silence.

Hammer whispered:

“You should have told me.”

Clara cried.

“I know.”

“Ellie knows who I am.”

“I know.”

“She called me Dad.”

Clara smiled through tears.

“She always knew.”

Hammer looked down.

“She doesn't even remember everything.”

“She doesn't have to.”

He touched Clara's cheek.

“You're really alive.”

Clara closed her eyes.

“For now.”

Hammer frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Clara's expression changed.

She looked toward the courthouse ceiling.

“Because Daniel wasn't the one who built this.”

Hammer froze.

“Then who?”

Clara pulled a photograph from her pocket.

A photograph of a man.

Hammer stared.

He knew him.

Everyone did.

The man had been appearing on television for weeks.

A respected federal official.

The man who had personally announced Hammer's arrest.

The man who had publicly promised justice for Ellie.

Hammer's face went cold.

“That's impossible.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

She whispered:

“He is the one who has been giving the orders.”

Hammer looked toward the courthouse doors.

The federal official entered.

Smiling.

Clapping.

Pretending to celebrate the arrests.

Then he looked directly at Hammer.

And winked.

May you like

Clara whispered:

“That's the real man without a shadow.”
