Chapter 6 - Margaret's BellThe ringing wouldn't stop.

Marcus dug through the debris.

“Help me!”

Arthur and Clara pulled boards aside.

Eli crawled into the opening.

His hand disappeared beneath a wooden beam.

“I found it.”

Marcus reached in.

A small silver bell.

Old.

Polished.

Tied to it was a brass tag.

17.

Arthur stared at it.

“Your mother kept that.”

Marcus pressed the bell.

Nothing happened.

He pressed again.

Deep beneath them, something clicked.

Then another.

A hidden mechanism came alive inside the walls.

Marcus looked at Arthur.

“What did that do?”

Arthur said:

“It opened something.”

The floor shifted.

A section of boards slid sideways.

A staircase appeared.

It descended farther than any previous passage.

Clara looked at Arthur.

“You never went down there?”

Arthur shook his head.

“Margaret locked it.”

Marcus stared into the darkness.

“Then we're going.”

Arthur grabbed his arm.

“No.”

“You just told me she built it.”

“Yes.”

“Then she wanted someone to find it.”

Arthur shook his head.

“She wanted someone to survive it.”

They descended.

At the bottom was a circular chamber.

There was no furniture.

Only walls covered in photographs.

Margaret.

Arthur.

Susan.

Vincent.

Marcus.

And people Marcus had never seen.

At the center was a large clock.

Its hands had stopped at 11:17.

Eli walked closer.

“What's that?”

A photograph was pinned beneath the clock.

It showed Margaret standing beside a young Susan.

Marcus recognized Susan immediately.

But she looked nineteen.

Beside them stood Vincent.

And another man.

Arthur's expression changed.

“Who is he?”

Clara whispered:

“My father.”

Marcus stared.

“You knew him?”

Arthur nodded.

“He founded the organization.”

Eli looked at the photograph.

“What's his name?”

Arthur didn't answer.

Clara did.

“Daniel Hale.”

Marcus frowned.

“Hale?”

“Vincent is his son.”

The pieces began moving.

Susan was connected to Vincent.

Vincent was connected to Daniel.

Daniel had built the network.

Margaret discovered it.

Arthur tried to stop it.

Then Marcus noticed a series of handwritten notes beneath the photographs.

One sentence appeared repeatedly.

THE HEIR MUST CHOOSE.

Marcus read the line aloud.

“What does that mean?”

A hidden speaker crackled.

A woman's recorded voice filled the room.

Margaret.

“My son, if you're hearing this, the room has been opened.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Her voice was unmistakable.

“I need you to understand something. Your grandfather's greatest mistake was believing this was about money.”

Arthur looked down.

Margaret continued.

“It isn't.”

The recording paused.

“It is about ownership.”

A click.

“The person who controls Calder House controls the trust behind it. Whoever controls the trust controls the archive. And whoever controls the archive can expose every name.”

Marcus looked around.

“The archive.”

Arthur whispered.

Margaret continued.

“They will tell you the house is worth millions.”

“That's a lie.”

“They will tell you our family built its fortune here.”

“Also a lie.”

Clara stepped closer.

Margaret's voice lowered.

“Calder House was built over something much older.”

Marcus felt uneasy.

“Below the foundation is a sealed archive containing contracts, recordings, photographs, and financial records dating back nearly a century.”

Susan's voice suddenly echoed from the doorway.

“Stop listening.”

Marcus turned.

Susan stood there.

Her gun was gone.

She looked exhausted.

Arthur stepped toward her.

“You knew about the archive.”

Susan looked at him.

“I knew enough.”

Marcus faced her.

“Why?”

Susan began to cry.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just one silent tear.

“Because they killed my sister.”

Arthur's expression softened.

“Margaret.”

Susan nodded.

“I was there the night she escaped.”

Marcus froze.

“You helped her?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you work with Vincent?”

Susan looked toward the clock.

“Because Vincent found me.”

She swallowed.

“He told me if I didn't help him, Eli would disappear.”

Eli went still.

Susan looked directly at the boy.

“I tried to keep you safe.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You imprisoned Dad.”

“I had no choice.”

Arthur snapped:

“You always had a choice.”

Susan looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You don't understand.”

Then she stepped backward.

“They're here.”

Marcus heard a sound from the corridor.

Many footsteps.

Susan closed the hidden door.

“You need to find the archive before Vincent does.”

Marcus shouted:

“What about you?”

Susan looked at him.

“I've already lost.”

The door slammed.

From the other side came a gunshot.

Susan screamed.

Marcus lunged for the door.

Arthur held him back.

“She bought us time.”

Marcus stared at the sealed doorway.

Then Eli pointed at the clock.

“Dad.”

The clock had started moving again.

Its hands were counting down.

11:16.

11:15.

11:14.

And beneath the clock was a digital display.

00:59:59.

A timer had begun.
